To live in the Radical Living community we require a one-year commitment and a desire to live in community. The membership process includes filling out an application (available upon request) and joining us for a membership dinner. We hope that you will be able to participate in our rhythm of community in order to discern whether you are called to live here, and that you enter into that decision prayerfully.
Please call either 917.459.3813 or email living@radicallivingnyc.com to request an application and to start the membership process. Here are links to maps to the houses:
FAQs
What is the mission of Radical Living?
To foster a community of Christ-followers, growing together as we worship Jesus Christ, and creatively use resources for social justice to advance God’s kingdom in our neighborhood and the world.
Why are you called “Radical Living”?
“Radical” means “relating to, or proceeding from a root.” Thus, we are seeking to return to the root (Rev. 22:16) of our faith through studying the teachings of Jesus Christ and living them out in sincerity and conviction. The plant firmly rooted in good soil will surely bear abundant fruit.
Do I have to be a Christian to be a member of Radical Living?
Most people who live here are Christian, yet there have been people who live here who are either seeking to know God or are non-religious yet have a respect for the values and mission of the house.
Is Radical Living affiliated with any denomination?
People who live and/or fellowship here come from a wide range of Christian traditions and experiences, including Protestant, Catholic, Anabaptist, Coptic, Charismatic, Emerging, non-denominational and more. The purpose of this community, rather than to allow denominationalism to divide the body of Christ, is to share the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Is Radical Living aligned with any political ideology?
Like the tax collector (i.e. a far-right supporter of the State) and the zealot (i.e. an insurgent working to bring down the Empire) who put their politics aside to follow and worship the Lord Jesus, so do we make politics secondary (or tertiary) to our pursuit of God.
What kind of commitment will I have to make to Radical Living?
We hope the organizational structure of the community will remain organic and Spirit-led. We do expect each member to pay their rent (due the first of the month) and their portion of the utilities (which are split between floor mates) so that we can continue to function as a community. Besides that, there are two monthly meetings that everyone in the community is expected to attend. The meetings are an opportunity to fellowship, talk about how the community can be improved, and to organize around issues. We also expect a one-year commitment from each member. When moving out of the community we ask for at least a one-month’s notice.
What’s the neighborhood like?
Bed-Stuy is predominantly African-American, yet there is a very large Orthodox Jewish community just a few blocks away and with the recent rent hikes throughout the city there has been an exodus of hipsters, artists and students from Manhattan and other more expensive neighborhoods into Bed-Stuy. The houses associated with Radical Living are located on the border of Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill. Grocery stores, restaurants and cafes, a (free!) public pool, and laundromats are located within walking distance.
What are the closest subway stations and bus stops?
The closest subway stations are the Bedford-Nostrand and Myrtle-Willoughby stops on the G line. The closest bus lines are the B38, B44 and B54 buses. Check out the MTA maps here and here.
How far is the house from Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn?
It takes 20 minutes to commute to Lower Manhattan (i.e. Union Square or Lower East Side) and 10 minutes to downtown Brooklyn by train or 15 minutes by bus. Some housemates jog across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan or walk to downtown Brooklyn.
Are pets allowed in the community?
Pets are allowed in the Pulaski and Marcy Houses, but not Hart House.
Do I need to have a bed, furniture or appliances?
Most floors have some furniture and some rooms already have beds. There’s a fridge and stove on each floor.
